Comic book workshops for children and young people

Workshops Overview

Our comic workshop is a fun and creative activity for children and young people, which offers an insight into all aspects of comics - of which there are many more than you might think!

In our workshop, children and young people learn to look further, at emotions and acting, at caricature types, the use of layout, visualisation and framing.

We teach our participants to play with the different aspects of comic books, from developing a simple story with a clear narrative structure to drawing, building up and then realising cartoon characters which bring their story to life. The course will also teach students how to work with the conventions of comic books, such as speech bubbles, frames, layout types and inserts. The workshop is a wonderfully creative lesson for everyone regardless of their drawing skills, in fact I encourage children who are anxious about their drawing ability to try a course as I believe that every child's style can give life to a comic. It also gives children who are genuinely interested in cartoon drawing that extra insight and support which is so important at that age.

chrischa van de voorde

My name is Chrischa Van de Voorde. I mainly work as a graphic designer and illustrator but have been working on comics all my life. I grew up with comic books in the Franco/Belgian tradition, such as The Smurfs, Asterix, Tintin, Lucky Luke, Gaston, and many more. This is the style in which I've always drawn and also the style in which I teach the workshops. The typical American style super hero comics generally utilise a more realistic drawing style, but in order to start children off, I believe the free-form nature of the European style works better. It allows them to more loosely draw characters, leading them to spend more time practicing expressions and poses. The children don't need to focus on trying to draw a realistic person and so can put all their energy in making their creations come alive.

Comics have so much to offer, combining different art forms such as writing, drama, illustration and film. You have to be somewhat familiar with all these art forms to make a good comic and teaching this process is a central part of my workshops. Think beyond those rigid grids, make your character come alive and make it move, create an interesting page, think of a story with a clear beginning, middle and end. Anything is possible in a comic!

Our workshop can be adjusted to any age group, to the timeframe available and to any situation.

Both the way the workshop is given and the content can be adapted to the time available and the age of the group. The course is completely flexible and can be adapted to any group and to any timeframe.

The possibilities are endless and it's not necessary for the children or young people to be have any notable drawing ability in order to follow or enjoy this workshop. If they think they can't draw (because I am convinced all children can draw), then let's make a scribble and create a story around that scribble. Everything is possible, because we are making a comic book!

Packages

Comic book workshops in English, for every occasion.

Belgium is world famous for our beer, chocolate and of course our comic books! I grew up with Tintin, The Smurfs, Lucky Luke and Asterix, and as a child I was forever drawing comics from morning to night (yes, also during school hours…). Today I bring that Franco-Belgian tradition to birthday parties, offices, schools and cultural centres, in English or in Dutch.

Whether you're an expat family in Brussels or Antwerp, an international company looking for a team day with a difference, or a school abroad joining us via Zoom, there's a package for you below. We come to you anywhere in Flanders and Brussels, from our base in Oudenaarde, and further afield online with our Zoomshops.

Every package can be tailored, so just ask for a quote. All prices are guide prices; get in touch and we'll put together the package that fits you best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you'd like to know about our workshops

Do you need to be able to draw?
Not at all. The workshop is for everyone, whatever their drawing skills. We start from the basics, and anyone who already loves drawing gets that extra insight and encouragement.
What age is it for?
Our workshops are for children and young people from six onwards, and with team building for adults too. The comic book birthday party is for children aged 6 to 14, and our online Zoomshops work best from about 7, once children can write. There is no maximum age!
How long does a workshop last?
You decide. Two hours is the minimum and three hours the most common. Cultural centres and academies can also book a lesson series or a holiday comic camp.
Where do you teach?
We come to you anywhere in Flanders and Brussels, from our base in Oudenaarde: at home, at school, at the office, in a party venue or a cultural centre. Further afield? Then the workshop can be online.
Can the workshop be online?
Yes, live via Zoom. I share my drawing program so everyone sees the drawings take shape. That works for a fixed group (a class or an art group), as online team building, or through our own Zoomshops for children at home.
What do we need to provide?
A room where everyone can sit comfortably, with a board to draw on for the group. For an online workshop: paper and pencils, a screen or projector, and one person with the group so I can hear their questions and ideas.
Are the drawing materials included?
Yes, for workshops in person we bring all the drawing materials. Only for an online workshop do you provide your own paper and pencils.
How much does a workshop cost?
A group workshop costs €145 for 2 hours and €175 for 3 hours, in person or via Zoom. Each package has its own price, which you'll find with the package. All prices are guide prices, excl. VAT where applicable.
How many people can take part?
That depends on the package. A birthday party is for up to 16 children, a team building for 8 to 30 participants. For bigger events we add extra supervisors.
Can I give a workshop as a present?
Yes, with a Comic Voucher: a hand-drawn gift voucher for any workshop or a complete comic book birthday party, valid for one year from the date of purchase.
Which language do you teach in?
In English or in Dutch.
Who teaches the workshops?
Chrischa Van de Voorde, a graphic designer and illustrator who has been making comics all her life.
How do I ask for a quote?
Fill in the enquiry form and we'll reply within two working days. A quote is always free and without obligation.
We learn about layout, camera positioning, emotions, text balloons, onomatopoeia, ... in short all elements present in comic books.
