Comic book workshops for children and young people

Workshops Overview

Our comic workshop is a fun and creative activity for children and young people, which offers an insight into all aspects of comics - of which there are many more than you might think!

In our workshop, children and young people learn to look further, at emotions and acting, at caricature types, the use of layout, visualisation and framing.

We teach our participants to play with the different aspects of comic books, from developing a simple story with a clear narrative structure to drawing, building up and then realising cartoon characters which bring their story to life. The course will also teach students how to work with the conventions of comic books, such as speech bubbles, frames, layout types and inserts. The workshop is a wonderfully creative lesson for everyone regardless of their drawing skills, in fact I encourage children who are anxious about their drawing ability to try a course as I believe that every child's style can give life to a comic. It also gives children who are genuinely interested in cartoon drawing that extra insight and support which is so important at that age.

chrischa van de voorde

My name is Chrischa Van de Voorde. I mainly work as a graphic designer and illustrator but have been working on comics all my life. I grew up with comic books in the Franco/Belgian tradition, such as The Smurfs, Asterix, Tintin, Lucky Luke, Gaston, and many more. This is the style in which I've always drawn and also the style in which I teach the workshops. The typical American style super hero comics generally utilise a more realistic drawing style, but in order to start children off, I believe the free-form nature of the European style works better. It allows them to more loosely draw characters, leading them to spend more time practicing expressions and poses. The children don't need to focus on trying to draw a realistic person and so can put all their energy in making their creations come alive.

Comics have so much to offer, combining different art forms such as writing, drama, illustration and film. You have to be somewhat familiar with all these art forms to make a good comic and teaching this process is a central part of my workshops. Think beyond those rigid grids, make your character come alive and make it move, create an interesting page, think of a story with a clear beginning, middle and end. Anything is possible in a comic!

Our workshop can be adjusted to any age group, to the timeframe available and to any situation.

Both the way the workshop is given and the content can be adapted to the time available and the age of the group. The course is completely flexible and can be adapted to any group and to any timeframe.

The possibilities are endless and it's not necessary for the children or young people to be have any notable drawing ability in order to follow or enjoy this workshop. If they think they can't draw (because I am convinced all children can draw), then let's make a scribble and create a story around that scribble. Everything is possible, because we are making a comic book!

Packages

Comic book workshops in English, for every occasion.

Belgium is world famous for our beer, chocolate and of course our comic books! I grew up with Tintin, The Smurfs, Lucky Luke and Asterix, and as a child I was forever drawing comics from morning to night (yes, also during school hours…). Today I bring that Franco-Belgian tradition to birthday parties, offices, schools and cultural centres, in English or in Dutch.

Whether you're an expat family in Brussels or Antwerp, an international company looking for a team day with a difference, or a school abroad joining us via Zoom, there's a package for you below. We come to you anywhere in Flanders and Brussels, from our base in Oudenaarde, and further afield online. Every package can be tailored, so just ask for a quote.

Comic Book Birthday Party

Families · ages 6 to 14

The birthday party of the year! I come to your home or party venue and together with their friends, the kids create a real comic book. Everyone invents their own hero, we learn to draw emotions and action, and of course the birthday girl or boy gets the starring role. Every child goes home with their own handmade comic, a much better party favour than a bag of sweets.

  • 2 hour party, up to 10 children: €195
  • Each extra child (max. 16): €12
  • Extra: the birthday child drawn as a comic hero on the invitation: €45
  • All drawing materials included, excl. travel costs

Team Building: Team in Comics

Companies · 8 to 30 participants

Making a comic is teamwork in its purest form: you have to come up with a story, make choices, split up the roles and communicate it all clearly in a handful of panels. In small teams, your colleagues create a short comic about your company, a project, your values or simply the best office mishap of the year. No drawing talent needed, a stick figure from accounting can be every bit as funny as a drawing by Hergé.

Afterwards we scan every comic and bundle them into a digital comic album of your team, perfect for the newsletter, the intranet or the wall by the coffee machine. Ideal for international teams, as comics speak every language.

  • Half day (3 hours), up to 12 participants: €495
  • Each extra participant: €25
  • Printed album for every participant: on request
  • In person or online via Zoom, in English or Dutch
  • Materials and digital album included, excl. VAT and travel costs

Company Parties & Family Days

Companies · staff parties, family days, open days

At a staff party or family day, keeping the kids busy is half the job. With our open workshop they get a calm, creative corner they can drop in and out of while their parents enjoy the party. They work through worksheets which become gradually more challenging, so toddlers and teenagers alike can join in at their own level. And believe me, the parents often sit down to draw as well.

Want something extra? I can also capture the day as a live comic artist: drawing your guests and colleagues into a comic strip, or one big comic page of the whole event which you can frame afterwards.

  • Kids' corner half day (4 hours): €295
  • Kids' corner full day (7 hours): €495
  • Each extra supervisor: €35 / hour
  • Live comic artist at your event: from €95 / hour
  • Materials included, excl. VAT and travel costs

International Schools

International schools in Belgium & English-speaking schools worldwide

The workshop begins with writing a simple synopsis and takes students on a journey where they decide which elements their idea needs to come alive: characters, emotion, layout, framing and speech bubbles. It fits naturally into art, literacy and media studies. I deliberately teach the Franco-Belgian style, because as I explain in the overview, it's a better starting point for young comic artists than realistic superhero drawing (though I'm always happy to draw Spider-Man when asked!).

Book a Comic Day and I'll teach several classes back to back, making it more affordable for the school and turning it into a real event. For schools in the Benelux I come in person and bring all materials; you just need a classroom and a board to draw on. Further afield, I bring the lesson straight into your classroom via Zoom, sharing my drawing screen live so everyone can watch the drawings appear.

  • Workshop per class, 2 hours: €145
  • Comic Day, 3 classes in one day: €375
  • In person (Benelux) or online via Zoom
  • Materials included, excl. VAT and travel costs

Cultural Centres, Libraries & Art Academies

Holiday workshops, lesson series, open days

Comics are a cornerstone of Belgian culture and deserve a place in every cultural programme. I'm happy to run a one-off children's workshop or an open day, but the workshop really shines as a lesson series or a holiday camp, where the children go home after a few days with a complete comic story of their own.

Tight budget? Then let's look at a format where participants sign up and pay themselves. You provide the space and spread the word, we take care of the rest.

  • Lesson series 4 x 2 hours: €495
  • Comic camp, 5 half days during the holidays: €695
  • Ticketed format with a fee per participant: open to discussion
  • Materials included, excl. VAT and travel costs

Gift Voucher: give a Comic Voucher

The perfect gift for young and old comic artists

Looking for an original present for Christmas, Sinterklaas, a birthday or a communion? Give a Comic Voucher! A gift that doesn't end up at the back of a cupboard, but turns into an afternoon full of creativity and a handmade comic book.

Every voucher is unique: I draw a little comic character on it with the name of the lucky recipient. You receive it as a PDF to print yourself, or as a printed card in the post.

  • Birthday party voucher, a complete comic book party: €195
  • Voucher for any amount, valid for every workshop: from €25
  • Printed card by post: + €5
  • Valid for one year from the date of purchase

How it works: send us a message with the amount or voucher you'd like, the name of the recipient, and whether you'd like it digitally or by post. We'll send you the payment details, and within two working days of payment you'll have your hand-drawn voucher.

Comicbook Zoomshops

Our own online comic book course

So what on Earth are Zoomshops? Zoomshops are online lessons which we organise ourselves. They allow us to teach budding comic book enthusiasts wherever they live, using the free conferencing software Zoom to bring video and interactivity to our lessons.

We teach our Zoomshops in two different formats, a single two and a half hour workshop for £13 / $15 per participant and a more comprehensive three part course for £32 / $35. The single lesson is our basic course in the fundamentals of comic book creation. The multipart course expands on this for a more in-depth look at each aspect of comic book creation.

In addition to these two standard offerings, we will occasionally host special workshops which focus on a specific aspect of comic books, so please like and follow us on Facebook to stay up to date on our latest offering.

Online workshops for groups

Zoomshops are for children joining from home, but the workshop works just as well online for a whole group. I teach live via Zoom and share my drawing screen, so everyone sees the drawings appear while I explain.

A class or group via Zoom: ideal for international schools and English-speaking groups abroad. You show the lesson on a digital whiteboard or projector, and one supervisor makes sure I can hear the group's questions and ideas. We test the connection together a few days beforehand.

Online team building: is your team spread across home offices or countries? Everyone joins from their own screen and creates a comic about your team together. Read all about Team in Comics.

  • Group workshop via Zoom, 2 hours: €145
  • Group workshop via Zoom, 3 hours: €175
  • No travel costs. Prices excl. VAT.
